Its appeal for this recommendation lies in responsibility for one’s words and judgments made with incomplete information, rather than the author’s reputation alone.

The story opens with three men hiding in a closed general store after a robbery. Incoming requests for advice lead them to answer in the former owner’s place. The Japanese publisher confirms that the correspondence links past and present, connecting people at important crossroads. That is enough of the setup to know without learning how those connections eventually resolve.

An interpretive question: who gets to give advice?

Our interpretation is that placing people who have just done wrong in the position of advisers raises an interesting question: must someone first put their own life perfectly in order before helping anyone else? If so, very few people would qualify to listen. If not, where should an adviser’s confidence stop? This question allows room to examine the characters beyond good-or-bad labels without excusing their actions.

Another question is whether advice helps someone make a choice or makes the choice for them. Good intentions can encourage premature conclusions when the adviser knows only what is written down.
